- 237 tow-car models across 38 makes were publication-ready in our 31 August 2026 snapshot.
- Those model summaries represent 6,957 catalogue samples. This is a catalogue evidence count, not 6,957 unique registered vehicles.
- The median of the 237 model-level median braked towing limits is 1,600kg.
- 149 models (62.9%) have a model median of at least 1,500kg; 87 (36.7%) reach at least 2,000kg.
- Only 39 models (16.5%) have a median of 2,500kg or more, and only 21 (8.9%) reach 3,000kg or more.
- At the heavy end, 13 models (5.5%) have a 3,500kg model median.
- The biggest lesson is not simply which model to buy: the exact engine, year, gearbox and derivative can change the towing limit dramatically.
Most lists of the “best tow cars” start with opinions. We started with the data. RoamWorthy’s tow-car catalogue combines real calculator demand, verified vehicle facts and model-level evidence into a publication-ready database designed to help caravan buyers narrow the field before checking an exact vehicle.
For this report we took a snapshot of the RoamWorthy tow-car database on 31 August 2026. The published set contained 237 models from 38 makes, representing 6,957 catalogue samples. We then looked at the model-level median braked towing limit, evidence depth and the spread between the lowest and highest supported towing limits within each model.
How much towing capacity is actually common?
The first useful finding is the shape of the catalogue. The median of all 237 model-level median towing limits is 1,600kg. In other words, the centre of the published tow-car universe is much closer to the needs of mainstream single-axle caravans than to the 3,500kg headline figures often associated with large SUVs and pickups.
| Model median braked towing limit | Models | Share of 237 models |
|---|---|---|
| At least 1,500kg | 149 | 62.9% |
| At least 2,000kg | 87 | 36.7% |
| At least 2,500kg | 39 | 16.5% |
| At least 3,000kg | 21 | 8.9% |
| 3,500kg median | 13 | 5.5% |
That drop-off matters. A buyer looking for a car with a model median around 1,500–2,000kg has a large field to compare. Move the requirement above 2,500kg and the choice narrows quickly. At 3,000kg-plus, the market represented in our catalogue becomes a specialist group dominated by larger SUVs, pickups and utility vehicles.
The strongest heavy-towing models in our data
To stop a thinly sampled model from topping the table by accident, this ranking only includes models with at least 10 catalogue samples. We rank by the median braked towing limit, not the single highest figure we have ever seen for that badge.
| Model | Samples | Supported range | Model median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volkswagen Touareg | 40 | 3,500–3,500kg | 3,500kg |
| Ford Ranger | 36 | 3,000–3,500kg | 3,500kg |
| Land Rover Discovery | 28 | 3,500–3,500kg | 3,500kg |
| Range Rover Sport | 26 | 2,500–3,500kg | 3,500kg |
| Land Rover Defender | 22 | 3,000–3,500kg | 3,500kg |
| Isuzu D-Max | 21 | 3,500–3,500kg | 3,500kg |
| Nissan Navara | 15 | 2,600–3,500kg | 3,500kg |
| Range Rover | 13 | 3,500–3,500kg | 3,500kg |
| Jeep Grand Cherokee | 19 | 2,774–3,500kg | 3,325kg |
| Mitsubishi Shogun | 16 | 3,000–3,500kg | 3,300kg |
| Audi Q7 | 27 | 2,800–3,500kg | 3,200kg |
| Volkswagen Amarok | 14 | 3,000–3,500kg | 3,100kg |
This is not a verdict on comfort, reliability, price, running costs or suitability for a particular caravan. It is a ranking of the towing-capacity evidence in our catalogue. The distinction matters. A car can have an impressive maximum braked towing figure and still be the wrong match for your actual caravan, load, licence position or intended use.
The family-SUV sweet spot is more interesting than the 3,500kg club
The heavy-duty end gets the headlines, but the high-volume evidence sits further down the scale. Several mainstream family SUVs combine large sample sizes with model medians between roughly 1,650kg and 2,300kg.
| Model | Samples | Supported range | Model median |
|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo XC60 | 157 | 750–2,400kg | 2,300kg |
| Ford Kuga | 316 | 1,200–2,100kg | 2,100kg |
| Volkswagen Tiguan | 224 | 1,800–2,500kg | 2,000kg |
| Skoda Kodiaq | 106 | 1,800–2,000kg | 2,000kg |
| Mazda CX-5 | 76 | 1,800–2,000kg | 2,000kg |
| Toyota RAV4 | 68 | 800–2,000kg | 1,650kg |
| Kia Sportage | 172 | 1,650–1,650kg | 1,650kg |
| Hyundai Tucson | 152 | 1,650–1,650kg | 1,650kg |
The point is not that every XC60 can tow 2,300kg or every Kuga can tow 2,100kg. The opposite: the ranges show why model-name shopping is only the first pass. When the caravan is known, the next step should be to identify the exact derivative of the car you own or are considering.
The most important finding: one model name can hide a huge towing-capacity gap
This is the finding we would put in front of every caravan buyer. Some model families have exceptionally wide supported towing ranges.
| Model | Samples | Lowest supported limit | Highest supported limit | Spread |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Volvo XC60 | 157 | 750kg | 2,400kg | 1,650kg |
| Volvo V90 | 29 | 750kg | 2,400kg | 1,650kg |
| Mercedes-Benz Sprinter | 35 | 2,000kg | 3,500kg | 1,500kg |
| Fiat Ducato | 26 | 1,600kg | 3,000kg | 1,400kg |
| Volvo XC40 | 100 | 750kg | 2,100kg | 1,350kg |
| Ford Kuga | 316 | 1,200kg | 2,100kg | 900kg |
| Toyota RAV4 | 68 | 800kg | 2,000kg | 1,200kg |
That is why a search for “Volvo XC60 towing capacity” can be misleading when treated as a single number. In our catalogue the model family spans from 750kg to 2,400kg. The correct figure for a specific XC60 depends on the exact vehicle specification represented by its year, powertrain and derivative.
Which makes have the deepest heavy-towing range?
Brand comparisons need care because each make has a different mix of cars in the catalogue. We therefore do not call this a “best brand” ranking. Instead, we counted how many published models from each make have a model median of at least 2,500kg or 3,000kg.
- Land Rover: 8 published models, with 4 at or above a 3,000kg median.
- Volkswagen: 23 published models, with 6 at or above 2,500kg and 3 at or above 3,000kg.
- Audi: 12 published models, with 2 at or above 3,000kg.
- Nissan: 9 published models, with 2 at or above 3,000kg.
- Mitsubishi: 4 published models, with 2 at or above 3,000kg.
The Land Rover result is unsurprising given the make’s large-SUV mix, while Volkswagen’s breadth is notable because its 23 published models cover everything from ordinary passenger cars to vans and heavy-towing SUVs. These counts describe the current RoamWorthy catalogue, not UK market share or sales volume.
How strong is the evidence?
We do not publish every observation that enters the system. The publication-ready snapshot is gated for canonical make/model identity, towing evidence, a minimum sample threshold and usable media. Within the 237 published models, 153 are currently rated high quality, accounting for 5,902 of the 6,957 catalogue samples. A further 77 models are rated medium quality, with a small remainder supported by legacy verified baselines or other publication-qualified evidence.
For the heavy-tow ranking above we added another guardrail: a minimum of 10 samples. That does not make every number immutable. It simply makes the ranking much less vulnerable to one unusual derivative or a very thin model record.
Methodology
- Snapshot date: 31 August 2026.
- Population: 237 canonical, publication-ready tow-car model pages across 38 makes.
- Evidence count: 6,957 model-level catalogue samples. This is not a count of unique UK vehicles or registrations.
- Main ranking metric: model-level median braked towing limit.
- Heavy-tow ranking gate: at least 10 catalogue samples.
- Range: lowest and highest supported braked towing limits in the model catalogue after publication rules.
- What we did not rank: reliability, purchase price, fuel economy, comfort, depreciation, insurance, road behaviour or caravan-match suitability.
The data is designed for discovery, not to replace the plate, handbook or exact vehicle documentation. Towing limits can differ by engine, gearbox, drivetrain, year and derivative. If you already know the registration, use our registration lookup. If you know the caravan too, use the towing calculator to compare the outfit rather than relying on a model-level headline.
What this changes for caravan buyers
The data suggests a better buying process than simply searching “best car for towing a caravan” and choosing the first familiar SUV.
- Start with the caravan weight you actually need to accommodate.
- Use the tow-car directory to narrow to models whose supported towing evidence sits in the right region.
- Prefer models with deeper evidence when two options appear otherwise similar.
- Check the spread within the model. A wide range is a warning that the derivative matters a lot.
- Before buying, confirm the exact car by registration or manufacturer documentation.
That last step is the one generic “best tow car” lists cannot do for you. The badge may get you onto the shortlist; the exact vehicle decides the number you should use.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best tow car in the RoamWorthy data?
There is no single overall winner because towing capacity is only one part of choosing a car. Among models with at least 10 samples, several have a 3,500kg model median, including the Volkswagen Touareg, Ford Ranger, Land Rover Discovery, Land Rover Defender and Isuzu D-Max. That does not mean every derivative has the same limit or that each is suitable for every caravan.
How many tow cars are in the RoamWorthy database?
At the 31 August 2026 snapshot used for this report, the publication-ready catalogue contained 237 models across 38 makes, representing 6,957 catalogue samples.
How common is a 2,000kg towing capacity?
In this snapshot, 87 of 237 published models — 36.7% — had a model median braked towing limit of at least 2,000kg.
Why can the towing capacity differ so much within one model?
A model name can cover different generations, engines, gearboxes, drivetrains and derivatives. The towing limit belongs to the exact vehicle specification, not simply the badge on the boot. The Volvo XC60 is a clear example in our data, with supported figures ranging from 750kg to 2,400kg across the model family.
Should I use the maximum or median towing capacity shown on a model page?
Use model-level figures to understand the range and shortlist vehicles. For a purchase or outfit decision, check the exact vehicle. The median is useful for analysing a model family; the maximum should never be assumed to apply to every version.
